Alacranes
Danta Maria del Oro in the state of Durango, duranguense pacesetters
Alacranes Musical became a fixture on Regional Mexican radio starting
in 2004. The group was formed in November of 1998, choosing their name
("Scorpion") to pay homage to their rustic, arid home state of Durango.
The band's unique blend of polka, cumbia and balada first caught audiences'
attention with their 2003 debut Furia Alacranera. Just a year later, as
duranguense began to emerge as an undeniable force in the Regional Mexican
music world, Alacranes released A Cambio de Que. The record became one of
the top Spanish language releases of the year, a feat not often achieved in
the Regional Mexican genre. 2005's 100% Originales went a step further, making
it onto Billboard's Top 200. All the while the Alacranes Musical toured the U.S.
and Mexico, playing dancehalls and festivals alongside groups like La Banda el
Recodo Los Tigres del Norte and Ramon Ayala, bolstering their notoriety all over
the continent. Releasing an average of two original records a year, Alacranes topped
their previous sales records with the 2006 album A Paso Firme, landing the number
one spot on Billboard's Regional Mexican charts, and once again landing in Billboard's
Top 200. Alacranes Musical have not slowed their pace since, maintaining a staggering
touring schedule while writing and recording new material for their longtime label,
Univision. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez, All Music Guide
Los Primos
Set apart both for their youth and location (one of few successful duranguense acts not
based in Chicago) Los Primos de Durango write new rules for success in the world of Regional
Mexican music. Los Primos de Durango emerged in 2003 as one of many groups riding Duranguense's
rise in popularity. The group consisted of nine members, all hailing from Vicente Guerrero,
Durango, and many of whom were still in their teens when the group's line up was solidified.
Members Javier Eduardo Vargas Amaya (vocals), Arturo Manuel Vargas Rios (vocals), Jesus Fernando
Vargas Rios (sax), Luis Enrique Vargas Rios (keyboard), Arturo Manuel Vargas Duenes (sax), Felipe
de Jesus Herrera Ramirez (drums), Eduardo Vargas Duenes (keyboard), Francisco Javier Vargas Duenes
(keyboard and tuba) and Now Serrano Dominguez (percusion) performed regionally and made numerous
television appearances preceding their debut record. In 2003 Nostalgia Duranguense was released,
featuring single "Tocando Fondo." The album became popular amongst the band's established fan base,
but did little to expand their popularity. It was not until their sophomore effort Tal Vez hit the
market that Los Primos de Durango became nationally known. The record garnered a handful of awards
nominations, including "Revelacion del Ano" and "Grupo Duranguense del Ano" from the Premios Furia
Musical. Thanks to "Tocando Fondo's" radio success, Los Primos were invited to perform throughout Mexico
in cities such as Leon, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi and more. Los Primo's singles such as "Voy a Converncerte,"
"Tal Vez" and the 2007 release "Y Tu Te Vas" landed on international airplay charts, appearing on Billboard
charts in several categories. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez, All Music Guide
K-Paz De La Sierra
Duranguense superstars K-Paz de la Sierra are a product of, and perhaps pacesetters in, the regional
Mexican music boom that has hit the city of Chicago and since spread throughout the U.S. and Mexico.
Thanks to the enormous and regionally diverse Mexican population in Chicago, the city has become a hotbed
for musical creativity, and hence a recording industry hub for the genre. K-Paz de la Sierra burst onto
the scene in 2003 with their first single, "Con Olor a Hierba," which was quickly followed up by the
radio hit "Jambalaya." Just a few singles had stirred up so much attention that when their debut record
hit the shelves, Arrasando con Fuego sold better than 32,000 copies in its first week. It was not long
before the record went gold. Signing with Mexican music superpower Univision has gone a long way to guaranteeing
their success. K-Paz then recorded six more records, consistently reaching number one on Billboard's regional
Mexican charts. The group also made two appearances on the Billboard Top 200, for the hits "Mas Capaces Que
Nunca" and "Pensando en Ti," an impressive achievement for a group playing a style that the industry barely
recognized ten years before. Tragedy struck the group in late 2007, however, when lead singer Sergio Gomez was
tortured and killed after a concert in Michoacan.
